I love character songs.
In fact I love them so much that nearly every track on our new album (which drops in just 7 days!) is a story about a different character that somehow fits into our canon of inSanity.

It’s not surprising that I’m a huge fan of Bob Dylan, and I love discovering new perspectives and hidden meanings in his seemingly plain-stated lyrical masterpieces. The inspiration for this track is a sinister twist on ‘Mr. Tambourine Man,’ Dylan’s acid-induced tribute to a musical vagrant. (you can actually sing the lyrics of ‘Tambourine Man’ over ‘Billion Dollar’ and they fit!) I wrote the song around Christmas time 2010 when I was moonlighting on banjo and upright bass in a musical about singing cowboys.

On my way through Winter Park I would always see the same guy sitting outside the Rollins business school, a melancholy contrast to the fresh faces in business suits.
I tried to put myself inside the mind of an outsider as I imagined hundreds of ragged and destitute people throughout our city. I imagined how economic disenfranchisement can distort one’s entire perception and I wanted to capture that madness. The result is this musical piece of dark comedy and political absurdity. In context it puts a personal spin on the militant anger of the 99%. It’s definitely an anthem for misfits everywhere.

It also happens to have an incredible arrangement including distorted electric guitar, lounge piano channeling Oscar Peterson, off-kilter banjo picking, and a honking bari sax rounding out the low end. Listen to this track and you’ll hear the fullest realization of the miniature orchestra that is Soul inSanity.

This is a track we’ve been playing since our very first show nearly three years ago, but it fits perfectly into our new album ‘Music Noire’.
As you can tell from the album title, our songs are highly influenced by classic films. Each song is a different character, and when I listen to ‘Sueñe’ I imagine a motorcycle-riding bandit racing for his life along a desert highway. Gregg’s fiery trumpet melodies blend perfectly with the furious punk rock of the rhythm section.

‘Sueñe Nada Más’ can really get the crowd moving – we like to play it first in our live sets, loud and fast! This is the first of three free downloads from ‘Music Noire’ and we hope you like the new version of one of our standards.
Stay tuned because next week we’re dropping a track that’s brand new.. Peace, Love, inSanity!

It’s been nearly 6 months since we first headed to Floridan Studios to meet up with our mentor Daniel Flick.
Armed only with our instruments and wits we recorded tracks that would serve as the foundation for our greatest creation to date. Since then, over 100 hours of tracking, editing, mixing, and mastering have been put in to create our debut album “Music Noire”.
The result is 46 minutes of music, lyrics, and pure inSanity.

This record are a compilation of songs we’ve perfected over the course of three years of performing.
Longtime fans will recognize new versions of songs we’ve been playing since our very first show, like “Big Dreams” and “Suene Nada Mas” and I think everyone will get a kick out of brand new tracks like our folk punk anthem
“Mr. Billion Dollar” and the reggae rocker “Bad Shakes” which features a very special guest vocal performance..

The release party is going down at Spring Jambando – a FREE SHOW at the Plaza Theater in Orlando, April 28th. Until then stay tuned. We’ll be dropping tracks from the album each week leading up to Jambando.

Thanks for making our inSanity a reality!

This Friday at the Plaza Theater is Wildlife Jambando II, a benefit concert featuring local talents of the Legendary JCs, Shak Nasti, FunkUs, the inimitable Sam Rivers Rivbea Orchestra, and more.

All proceeds benefit the Wildlife Foundation of Florida’s Gulf Restoration Fund.
This program aims to alleviate the devastating effects of the Gulf oil spill through its four objectives:

1. Restore and maintain the Gulf marine habitat and ecosystems to ensure long-term survival of the fish and wildlife that rely on it.

2. Create a statewide network of hatcheries to ensure we have the short-term and long-term ability to replenish the economically critical marine fishery stocks.

3. Fund the ecosystem research and modeling that enables scientists and marine resource agencies and managers to understand and prioritize restoration efforts.

4. Create “The Next Generation that Cares(sm)” through focused efforts to engage the youth of Florida in directly experiencing, enhancing, and providing long-term understanding and appreciation for the unique natural resources of Florida.

Soul inSanity opens up the show at 6pm so get there early to show love. Connect with us on Facebook: Wildlife Jambando II @ The Plaza Live

We survived! Nearly an entire week of playing on the runbus stage in the staggering heat and the dewy night and staying up until the early morning seeing the best new music has left us all ragged yet totally empowered. I’m sitting here on the double bed on the hometown inn in ringgold ga with the entire band and alexia, our new biggest fan and costume designer, asleep all around our single room. The accommodations aren’t too shabby for 50 bucks a night. Still the view out the window looks like we’re on the surface of the moon.

The final day and night of Bonnaroo was everything we could have wanted and more. Maia makeshift, Laney jones and
kindergarten friends all had great sets in the afternoon sun. Laney was by far the most popular out of any of us. Everyone was falling in love with her sound and her look. Last night she play an entire set on the electric guitar, her first time ever playing the electric guitar, and she blew the crowd away. I played the drumset with here and it was very black keys.

In the evening as the crowds were leaving centeroo, a drumstrong drum circle was setting up im our big common area. We decided to jam out a set to the draw the crowd to the circle and by the time we got really down and dirty with our trip funk, the drum circle was full and jamming right along with us. We then broke it down got led the jam. It was so much fun playing with over 50 drummers. At the end of drum circle time, Soul inSanity played another set and got the whole crowd dancing. We played for over an hour for nearly 500 people. We met all the fans who loved us so much and handed out about 1500 cards.

At 11 pm, we had to stop playing because the band Dopeapod was booked to play in our area and they wouldn’t share the space. No worries because we were pretty wiped out by that point and all we wanted to do was get the hell outta there. We were all packed and ready to go but graham was nowhere to be found. When he finally got back from seeing Widespread Panic it was midnight. We retrieved the trailer from the vendor lot in bfe Bonnaroo, loaded it and were on our way it was 2 am. We drove for 2 hours and booked a night in the cheapest hotel I could find.

Saying so long and safe travels to all our new friends was bittersweet. As much as we were happy to be heading home, it was sad to be leaving such a fantastic crew of beautiful smart hip and Eco-conscious individuals. Thank you to the ygrin and runbus crew for making bonnaroo amazing. We will miss you all but we WILL meet again.

We’re in the car now and through Atlanta…jeez this is taking a long time to post. Anyway, my find fingers are starting to hurt.

Peace love and insanity.
